The United Nations (UN) voted on Wednesday to have the medicinal properties of cannabis removed from Schedule IV of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
The vote of most countries (53 Commission States) decided to withdraw cannabis and its resin from this list which did not recognize any of its medical properties. From now on, the countries agree will recognize its medical effects which could facilitate their research.
The Asiatic countries remained against this decision, but most countries in America and those in the European Union totaled at least 27 votes.
The reason why this fact is important is the opening of new horizons in medical science about this plant that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of Parkinson's, cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, arthritis, sclerosis, among others.
WHO: first approach to the subject
After more than 80 years (January 2019), the World Health Organization (WHO) officially conducted a study of some of the available medical science resources on this plant. Its recommendations were precisely its declassification of Schedule IV, due to the strong testimonial and scientific evidence available. However, with this vote cannabis will continue to belong to Schedule I of globally controlled substances.
From this fact, the vote that was postponed in June began to be coordinated and which, according to analysts, could rather mean a setback on the subject. However, States' interest in treating pain drug addictions makes some of them attractive to use compounds such as cannabidiol (CBD) to find treatments for it and other diseases.
Change could serve as a tool for countries where legal initiatives around the issue are being discussed.
